Mittemeijer has founded and led the department “Phase Transformations” at the Max Plank Institute for Metals Research since 1998. The department consists of about 40 people of the most diverse nationalities
(Master students, Ph.D. students, visiting scientists, post-docs and staff scientists, supported by a number of technicians) and controls extensive equipment for X-ray diffraction analysis; scanning Auger microscopy nd X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy and ellipsometry; calorimetry and dilatometry.
The department’s specific research field is Phase Transformations in solid materials. On the basis of cutting-edge experiments one strives for developing models of phase transformations in bulk and anomaterials (thin films). These models should not only provide fundamental insight into nature, but also be applicable in practice in order to optimize material properties by controlling the material microstructure.
The department excels in the application of X-ray diffraction(XRD) methods, surface analytical methods (Auger electron spectroscopy(AES), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) and ellipsometry), and alorimetric and dilatometric methods. Also computer simulations of diffusion and phase transformations are an indispensable tool in the research work.
Mittemeijer studied physical chemistry and wrote a Ph.D. thesis entitled „Diffraction Studies of Concentration Variations“ (1978). Thereafter his research has been focussed on the relation between roperties and structure of new materials (e.g. nanomaterials) and, in particular, surface layers, and phase transformations of metastable materials.
